Dev Team: iPhone 3.0.1 Jailbreak & Unlock

The iPhone dev team has updated their blog that states that redsn0w will unlock and jailbreak all iPhones on firmware 3.0.1 that was just released today. They will update redsn0w later to support the 3.0.1 firmware.

Dev Team's post:

Short version:

You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

More details:

The 3.0.1 release is a “branch” from 3.0 that occurs (code-wise) before all the 3.1 betas. The programs redsn0w needs to change for the jailbreak are identical when you compare the 3.0 and 3.0.1 versions. It seems pretty much the only changes Apple made were for the SMS bug, which affects programs that redsn0w doesn’t touch. That’s why you can re-use redsn0w 0.8 on 3.0.1 even though it was written for 3.0.

And since 3.0.1 doesn’t touch the baseband either, ultrasn0w 0.9 works for those needing the soft unlock. Just install it from the repo666.ultrasn0w.com repository using Cydia as usual.

We’ll at some point fix redsn0w to recognize both 3.0 and 3.0.1 IPSW’s, but really that’s the only change that would be made to it. Everything else would be identical, so there’s no need to wait for the “proper” version that recognizes the 3.0.1 IPSW as valid.

UPDATE: iPhone 3.0.1 Firmware

ModMyi is reporting that using the 3.0 firmware in redsn0w on 3.0.1 does jailbreak the phone. Purplera1n did not work. The baseband has not been updated meaning that Ultrasn0w should work on the 3.0.1 firmware. iPhone 2G users should be able to update to 3.0.1 and then jailbreak/unlock using redsn0w with a 3.0 firmware file. Jailbreaking does work on all iPhones (iPhone, 3G, 3GS). Unlocking should work on 3G and 3GS, but has not been confirmed yet.

iPhone 3.0.1 Firmware Now Available - Fixes SMS Vulnerability

Firmware 3.0.1 is now available for the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS. The software update can be downloaded from iTunes. The update is about 300MB. The new update fixes the SMS hack that was announced yesterday at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas. If your iPhone is jailbroken or unlocked DO NOT UPDATE. Updating will break your unlock and/or jailbreak. So far, no new features have been added in this update.

Apple released the following statement:

We appreciate the information provided to us about SMS vulnerabilities which affect several mobile phone platforms. This morning, less than 24 hours after a demonstration of this exploit, we've issued a free software update that eliminates the vulnerability from the iPhone. Contrary to what's been reported, no one has been able to take control of the iPhone to gain access to personal information using this exploit.

iPhone SMS Hack to be Patched Saturday

UK cell phone provider O2 has been told by Apple that a patch will be released this weekend. The firmware update will be available on Saturday and can be downloaded and installed via iTunes. The SMS hack also affects Windows Mobile and Google Android phones. This hack involves sending a one character text message or a series of "invisible" texts. If your iPhone is jailbroken or unlocked, then do not update to the new firmware version until the dev team gives word that it's ok.

Windows 7 Theme for iPhone

A Windows 7 Theme has just been added to Cydia. This theme is a full featured that customizes almost every part of your device. The theme has many custom sounds, like when a new email is sent or received and new unlock sounds. The slide to unlock screen is modified so that you just have to tap once instead of sliding the arrow. The Windows 7 theme has custom icons for many of the apps from the App Store and Cydia. The background is pretty nice, too. Overall, I would rate this theme a 9 out of 10. You can download "Windows Advanced" from Cydia and must enable the theme from Winterboard. Take a look at a few of the screenshots below.

Cydia Store: 50K Apps Purchased

The Cydia Store was launched at the beginning of March and Cyntact was the first application. 4 months later 53,000 apps have been sold totaling about $210,000. Jay Freeman, the inventor of the Cydia Store, keeps a certain percentage of the app price just like Apple. The percentage is never higher than 30%. In the past month 3 million unique devices have accessed Cydia. YourTube was just released on Monday and already has been purchased over 1800 times for a total of $3600. The Cydia Store now has 15 applications available to download: iDitDahText, YourTube, 3G Unrestrictor, HexaBeep, gPSPhone, Music Controls, Inspell, PkgBackUp, NES 3, iSmartDialer, HapticPro, iWipe, SwirlyMMS, Voicemail Forwarder, and Cyntact. Most of the applications cost under $3.

iPhone SMS Hack; A Major Vulnerability

A major bug has been discovered in the iPhone that leaves every iPhone at risk. Sending a single character text message gives hackers direct access to the camera, messaging app, dialer, and Safari. This hack is possible regardless of which firmware you are running or which iPhone you have. The vulnerability has been reported to Apple over a month ago, but Apple has yet to release a fix for the bug.

"The technique involves sending only one unusual text character or else a series of "invisible" messages that confuse the phone and open the door to attack. Because users won't know whose messages to block in advance, there's little iPhone owners can do but to shut off the phone immediately if they suspect they're at risk -- a real problem as the trick could also be used to make an iPhone send more messages of its own."

"Someone could pretty quickly take over every iPhone in the world with this," Miller claimed to Forbes on Wednesday.

You can read more about this issue here via Apple Insider.

Note: This is the same hack that was reported over a month ago by Charlie Miller. Miller is expected to reveal the bug tomorrow.

Apple Claims Jailbreaking iPhones Could Bring Down Cell Towers

In Apple's efforts to try to make jailbreaking illegal they state that jailbreaking could cause cell towers to crash. Apple also claims that jailbreaking encourages cell tower terroism.

a local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could crash the tower software, rendering the tower entirely inoperable to process calls or transmit data”

“The technological protection measures were designed into the iPhone precisely to prevent these kinds of pernicious activities, and if granted, the jailbreaking exemption would open the door to them”

iPhone App Developers May Submit Keywords to Improve Search

Apple is asking iPhone app developers to submit keywords for their applications in order to enhance searching for apps. Developers may submit up to 255 characters worth of keywords that are separated by commas although developers are reporting a 100 character limit. This should make App Store searches much better because when searching for applications right now I get a lot of irrelevant results.

YourTube - Download YouTube Videos

YourTube is an application that allows you to download YouTube videos directly from the YouTube application. Installing this app adds a "Downloads" tab in the YouTube application. To download a video just press on the blue arrow next to the video and then tap on the download icon located in the top right corner. You can then select if you want to download the video in high or low quality. The downloads tab displays all of the videos that you have downloaded. The videos are downloaded in a .mp4 format. YourTube is very similar to MxTube (which is available for free from Cydia), except you must download videos from MxTube and not from the YouTube app. This app is available from the Cydia Store for $2 and was developed by a dev team member. Screenshots are below.
